In addition to being a musician and writer, Dix Bruce was a photographer for nearly all of his adult life. Since the early 1970s he took photos of musicians, actors, film directors, musical instruments, and more, often using the photos to illustrate his published articles, interviews, and books.

Much of the work was for David Grisman’s Mandolin World News, which Dix edited from 1978 to 1984. He interviewed, photographed, developed, and printed images of the greatest mandolinists of that era.

Some of what he considered his best, most interesting and historic photos are shown below. Most are his original black and white photos but some are historic prints acquired over the years.
