Class description:

After we’ve played a while most of us approach that wall of “Now what do I do next?” This class will explore some of the possibilities for expanding your playing beyond simple melodies and bass note /strum rhythm into more complex sounds, solos and improvisation. Some of the subjects we’ll discuss, depending upon the specific interests of the students, are how to find melody notes at different points on the neck; composing a second or third solo for a song; moving beyond the keys of G and C; how to kickoff a song; and finding the notes in between the melody notes. We may also get into more advanced techniques like crosspicking, double stops, closed position moveable chords, writing a chord chart, and of course basic music theory. Students will receive handout sheets with class materials to take home and work on after camp.
Prerequisites: Skill level for this class is intermediate/advanced; you should be able to change between chords quickly, play a melody on the instrument, and be open to exploring improvisation.
Bring your questions. Think about where you are in your playing and where you want to go. A recording device is helpful to remember what we do in class.

Acoustic Music Camp, July 26 – 29, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX

Great camp with a relaxed and friendly feel, wonderful teachers and an outstanding and welcoming bunch of folks. This is Dix's fourth year on the faculty and he'll be teaching guitar and mandolin. The camp's focus is on learning to play music but most of all, on how to have fun playing music with others. The camp also features a tongue-in-cheek "Banjo Containment Facility" where most of the banjo classes are taught. Gerald Jones, the director of the camp, leads the way in making the Acoustic Music Camp so pleasant.
